A shared boat on the Varanasi ghats costs a few hundred rupees and leaves when it is full, which on a slow afternoon can mean forty minutes of waiting. You get a seat, not a boat. The route is fixed, the duration is whatever the boatman decides, and on Ganga Aarti evenings shared boats are rafted together five deep — the boat at the back sees the boat in front.
A private boat booking reserves the whole vessel. You leave at your time, stop where you want, stay as long as your package runs, and on aarti evenings you get a front position rather than whatever is left. For a couple the difference is perhaps ₹1,500; for the photograph you actually wanted, it is the entire difference.
We operate four boat classes privately. Which one you want depends on group size, how much of the river you want to cover, and whether engine noise matters to you.
Fixed at booking. No festival surge, no per-head top-up at the ghat, no hidden charges.
Four classes, four genuinely different experiences. Cost is rarely the deciding factor — group size and noise tolerance usually are.
No engine, so you hear the ghats. The classic sunrise choice and the one photographers ask for. Slow, so it covers fewer ghats. See private rowing boat booking.
Reaches the far ghats comfortably inside two hours. The default choice for first-time visitors. See private motor boat booking.
Battery-assisted, much less noise and vibration than a diesel motor, with better seating. See light motor boat booking.
Twenty to fifty guests, upper deck, canopy, sound system. This is what you book for an event. See Bajra boat booking.
Varanasi gives you three genuinely distinct windows, and locals will tell you the first is the best.
Sunrise, 5:15–7:30 AM. Mist on the water, pilgrims bathing, the light every photographer comes for, and almost no boat traffic. See sunrise boat ride. Late afternoon, 4–5:30 PM. Warm light, calm river, the quietest option of the three — see sunset boat ride. Aarti evening, 6–8 PM. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, busiest and most dramatic — see Ganga Aarti boat booking.
