Why Locals Say Morning Beats Evening
Ask anyone who lives in Varanasi which boat ride to take and they will say the morning one. The evening aarti is the spectacle; the morning is the city.
At 5:15 the river is glass-flat and grey. Mist sits on the water. Along the steps, pilgrims are already in the Ganga performing the surya arghya, offering water to the rising sun. Wrestlers work out at the akharas near Tulsi Ghat. Dhobis beat laundry on the stones at Munshi Ghat. None of it is staged for visitors, and almost none of it is happening after nine in the morning.
Then the sun comes up behind the eastern bank, directly in front of you, and for about twenty minutes the entire western ghat façade turns gold. From the water you are facing it head-on. That is the photograph — and it is the reason photographers book the sunrise slot months out.
